Volvo - Willie Paterson’s Volvo EC18D is a ‘jack of all trades’
The 1.8 tonne compact excavator was supplied to proprietor Willie Paterson by SMT GB’s utility dealer, Rockbreakers UK, and replaces an older EC15B which was originally purchased back in 2005. “We’ve been really pleased with the original machine and that prompted us to replace it with the enhanced EC18D with the extending tracks and two-speed travel,” says Willie. “The machine does everything we want of it on site from getting into quite restricted areas to clean out conveyor belts, breaking concrete to expose broken water mains, maintaining ditches and water courses on the property boundaries and general ground maintenance,” he says. “We have the usual assortment of buckets. A hydraulic hammer and, more recently, we’ve added a hedge and ground cover cutter which runs off the third line.”
The Volvo EC18D features a D0.9A Volvo diesel engine that meets the latest EPA Stage-IV emission regulations. Emissions are further kept to a minimum thanks to the optional automatic idling system, which reduces engine speed to idle if the controls are inactive for more than five seconds. If the machine is left idling for longer, the engine can be automatically shut down. This then stops the hour meter, leading to longer service intervals, lower operating costs and ensuring a better resale value for the machine.
The EC18D sports a tough rear counterweight providing outstanding impact resistance and shields all vital components. The unique high-profile design is made from a single, strong piece of cast iron that wraps around each side of the machine for superb protection. The flat, toughened glass used on the four sides of the cab guarantees that replacements can be fitted simply, quickly and expensively if damage occurs.
The robust dozer blade is equipped with a welded-on cutting edge for superior wear resistance and a durable upper lip provides added protection against damage in tough applications and excellent stiffness when using the blade as a stabiliser. The sturdy structure and the curved profile of the blade ensure outstanding performance whether dozing or back filling.
Daily service points are logically grouped under the wide-opening engine hood. With Volvo’s patented multifunctional hydraulic oil filter, filtration occurs when the tank is filled or topped up and before the oil returns back via the drain lines. A transparent bowl enables easy oil level checks and permits early detection of contamination. Both the ease and speed of inspections, together with long 50-hour greasing intervals, increases uptime and encourages essential work to be carried out, enhancing machine lifetime.

BoSS is the leading access tower brand in the United Kingdom, providing comprehensive and versatile tower systems to domestic, commercial and industrial projects across the country.
Whilst the majority of towers are straightforward builds up to 8m externally or 12m internally, therefore covered by product standard EN1004:2004, the team at BoSS identified an opportunity to use the systems to replace the traditional tube and fitting scaffolds used on bigger projects, using EN1004 components but outside the scope of that standard.
This led to the formation of BoSS TASKFORCE, the expert BoSS Hire & Assembly network of carefully selected supply and erect access tower hire companies.
With founding members including Flow Access, STS & Tower Hire Services and Hi Point, this nationwide network of hire and assembly providers is capable of delivering more complex BoSS tower builds – known as prefabricated tower scaffold and covered by the new BS1139-6.
For each project, an individual design with structural calculations and method statement is prepared, before the complex structures are assembled by operatives with the appropriate competence from the BoSS TASKFORCE network. This includes scheme designs for linked, large deck and cantilever structures and site specific designs.
A Shade Greener & Hi Point Scaffolding
Hi Point, a Boss Taskforce member, is an independent specialist scaffolding contractor, operating throughout Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. According to MD, Chris Blantern, “the use of aluminium tower systems has grown, especially for light duty access. Boss is one of the best and most diverse access tower systems on the market and being a Boss Taskforce member means that we can offer our customers a bespoke and often more efficient service”
The boom in renewable energy has seen great success for Hi Point’s customer, A Shade Greener, the market leaders in the free solar industry, with more than 50,000 installs in the UK.
This rapidly growing business needed to work with partners they could rely on to deliver professional, innovative and efficient solutions to the vast array of different tower requirements that come with completing hundreds of home installations every week.
Jason Carlton, BoSS Commercial &Product Manager at Boss BoSS explains:
“BoSS TASKFORCE members have access to our full technical resources - including custom drawings, user instructions and a structural analysis data sheet confirming technical calculations, load factors and all information required under the ‘2005 Working at Height Regulations’”
“Working in partnership with HiPoint Scaffolding, we were able to focus on a safe, cost effective, modular construction solution for A Shade Greener that combines speed of assembly with minimal impact on working environment.”
By using BoSS towers and the BoSS Taskforce’s expertise, HiPoint are able to erect towers that meet the required safety criteria at more than double the amount of houses each day, compared to traditional scaffolding.
The towers are quicker to put up and easier to inspect, meaning that more than 400 properties each week are now having solar panels installed by the team. They also benefit each homeowner by taking up less room around the outside of each house and reducing the impact on valuable driveway space or parking access.

With the cold and wet weather taking across the UK, it is essential to keep yourself protected throughout hardworking conditions by wearing Blåkläder.
The Swedish work wear manufacturers offer a range of wind and waterproof winter jackets with great breathability. The jackets come in a variety of colours and have been deigned to keep you warm and dry no matter what the weather circumstances may be.
Fabric in the Blåkläder jackets have been designed using three different layers of a heat insulated lining, membrane and outer fabric. The insulation has been designed to keep you warm while the membrane is a wind and waterproof layer. The outer fabric keeps you dry on the outside which means wind, water and snow can’t get through.
Blåkläder’s lined winter trousers are the perfect accompaniment to the winter jacket. The trousers are guaranteed to keep you warm and dry, through sleet and snow and even the most biting cold. The trousers are made of a wind and waterproof material with taped seams and great breathability.
With all of the Blåkläder winter wear being certified, they demonstrate their confidence in the quality on the products. Blåkläder offer a lifetime warranty on all of their seams, meaning if during the useful lifetime of a garment a seam should fail, Blåkläder will repair or replace it free of charge provided the garment has not been torn or cut by sharp edges. This assurance of quality is notable in all Blåkläder products.
A recent poll by The Federation of Master Builders reported significant growth in employment for SME construction firms, with continued strength projected for the coming quarter. Despite this, the report detected a serious skills shortage within the industry, whereby employers are struggling to recruit enough skilled workers to service the needs of the surge in work.
According to research by totaljobs.com, 15 per cent of entry-level recruitment candidates surveyed were jobless a year after finishing their studies or training. However, among those who had completed apprenticeships, just five per cent were unemployed, far less than the number of unemployed graduates. This shows the construction sector’s positive approach towards taking on vocational workers, resulting in a higher level of employment for apprentices.
As a manufacturer and supplier of tools for professional tradesmen, the recruitment problem for the sector affects our business enormously. We are particularly committed to understanding and pursuing ways in which our tools can have a positive impact on the future of the industry, by encouraging young apprentices in their training schemes.
Rather than relying on recruitment firms to fill the gaps, we place supporting the next generation of tradesmen high on our agenda and offer a hands-on approach to tackling the skills shortage. Since 2003, Carl Kammerling International has supported over 22,500 apprentice electricians as part of its C.K Bright Sparks initiative.
Committed to developing bright ‘sparkies’ of the future, the C.K Bright Sparks programme was established to help support and promote vocational education programmes as an attractive option and a viable career path.
Bright Sparks began with just three colleges, but twelve years later, the scheme has grown significantly. Carl Kammerling International tools now provides sixty colleges and universities across the UK with a bursary and a selection of quality tools to use while training, helping to ensure the future development of professionals within the industry, while also promoting the use of the safest and best quality hand tools.
Bright Sparks not only offers free professional equipment for use in college workshops, but also a ‘prize fund’ to help motivate and enthuse apprentice electricians.
We know the constraints that educational establishments face when kitting out their workshops, but believe that those equipped with professional quality C.K tools will be in a prime position to produce the very best electricians in the country.
The bursaries and tools provided by Carl Kammerling International give the students a comprehensive and useful introduction to the tools and equipment they will use as professionals and gives them the opportunity to use the equipment under the expert guidance of their course tutors. By committing this support through our Bright Sparks initiative we can foster a real sense of encouragement among budding electricians.
Colleges receive up to forty tools each, choosing two professional quality C.K tools from a selection of toolbox heroes, of which they receive twenty of each to kit out their workshops. Colleges that renew their Bright Spark partnership will continue to build up their stock of top quality equipment.
Our approach of continual improvement and development through the Bright Sparks scheme is designed to help train future professionals within the electrical industry. Carl Kammerling International also believe that the tools electricians are introduced to during their training are the ones they choose throughout their careers. These tools must be of the highest quality - tools designed specifically for electricians; tools they can trust.
With the current employment gaps and shortage of construction tradespeople in the industry, as well as the recent findings from totaljobs.com highlighting the growth in opportunities for apprentices, there’s never been a better time to encourage the sector’s increasing prosperity by supporting its future tradespeople.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme has published a new 'Spotlight on...' initiative focusing on occupational cancers, which aims to raise awareness of how the industry can help to safeguard its workforce against occupational cancers - where protection and early intervention is critical - before it’s too late.
The construction workforce is at a greater risk of developing cancer, notably skin and lung cancer at work compared with any other industry group, if the risks posed fail to be appropriately managed. A number of the substances potentially causing risk include asbestos, silica, diesel engine exhaust emissions, paint and prolonged exposure to UV radiation. Without appropriate control measures in place, the workforce can be harmfully exposed by breathing these substances in or absorbing them through the skin.
Edward Hardy, Chief Executive of the Considerate Constructors Scheme said: “A staggering 40% of total occupational cancer deaths arise within the construction industry. There’s no doubt that more awareness raising and preventative measures need to be adopted across the industry. The Scheme monitors around 8000 sites, companies and suppliers every year, and therefore plays a critical role in helping to raise awareness on the ground.”
It is difficult to determine the true extent of occupational cancers as in many cases individuals fail to develop any noticeable symptoms of either skin or lung cancers until many years later. Therefore, occupational cancers are often not viewed as a high risk health and safety issue.
Hardy continues “The good news is that many of those registered with the Scheme are taking action. Examples include proactively removing carcinogen and hazardous substances, isolating high risk areas, introducing controls to reduce exposure, providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to match the working conditions, raising general awareness and offering appropriate support and advice.”
Visit www.ccscheme.org.uk or www.ccsbestpractice.org.uk to find a wealth of advice, useful information, case studies and links to other organisations and bodies to provide more information about dealing with occupational cancers.
