Snickers WorkTrousers are now getting even ‘Smarter’

With a proud history of exploring new techniques within workwear, Snickers Workwear is renowned for its modern designs, innovative functionality and market-leading fabric technology. Now its WorkTrousers are getting even ‘smarter’ with the integration of technology to improve performance and wellbeing at work.

In 2016, 100 craftsmen across five countries took part in a test wearing trousers featuring wearable technology measuring their performance to see how wearable technology can improve working health, and in the process, change the way we look at workwear.

Wearables are electronics that can be worn on the body, either as an accessory or as part of material used in clothing. One of the major features of wearable technology is its ability to connect to the Internet, enabling data to be exchanged between a device and a network. Wearable technology is already woven into our daily lives through smartphones, fitness devices, sports clothing and accessories - to help monitor and improve performance.

Snickers WorkTrousers are now getting even ‘Smarter’

‘Tracker 1’ is Snickers’ first prototype of wearable technology; a chip fitted to a pair of WorkTrousers enabling the user to monitor workplace noise levels, heat conditions and knee impact.

A recent study carried out in Scandinavia* showed that more than 50% of the professional craftsmen there are cutting corners at work and don´t use the available health and safety equipment as they should.

David Clark, managing director of the Hultafors Group UK says, “Our experience is that craftsmen usually are so focused on getting the job done that personal protection tends to be overlooked”.

But repeated ‘corner cutting’ over the years definitely creates a long-term health problem – an issue that Snickers Workwear has been continually addressing with its patented KneeGuard System.

Clark says, “The study shows that 6 out of 10 craftsmen are suffering from pain in their knees. So we see that there is definitely room for improving their wellbeing beyond just knee protection - and our ‘Smart Workwear’ is one way”.

Clark goes on to say, “Market-leading technology and innovation have long been hallmarks of Snickers Workwear.

We are well known for our KneeGuard System, 37.5 Fabric Technology and technical functionality, but the integration of ‘smart’ wearable technology into our clothing shows the extent to which we are looking at working clothes and wellbeing on site in a completely new way”.

Snickers All Round Work Trousers-Comfortable, Hardwearing and Above All, Stylish

The days of workmen and women turning out in jeans and a scrappy T-shirt are pretty well over.

We have all been blessed with a highly competitive market in work wear that ensures that pretty well 100% of work people have access to practical and hard wearing work wear.

But not all work wear is equal, as I have found to my cost, especially when I have impulse-bought cheaper trousers. My most common complaint is with the depth and placement of the pockets and of course the all important bending and kneeling test that can reveal just how much material has been saved in certain areas???

On the other hand, the Snickers All Round Work Trousers I have been wearing on site for the last week and a half have been incredibly comfortable and I am already considering the need for a second pair, despite the fact that they are not the cheapest trousers on the market.

It is only with extended wear that I have become aware of just how thoughtfully they have been designed and almost each day I have been surprised by one or other feature.

So, some facts: - they are made in Grey Cordura Nylon which is hardwearing, easy to wash and dries quite quickly too – especially over a radiator – so next day wear is on the cards if a spare pair is not available. Sizing couldn’t have been easier – although it was a bit of a shock to discover my growing waistline, the tape measure reading was spot on. To help you remember your size for easy next purchase, an orange tab on the leg reminds you and everyone else what your size is.

Belt loops are strong and frequent, including a double length loop at the back, so there is no gapping.

My first thought on all the pockets (I counted 15 of them) was that I surely wouldn’t need as many, but in the course of wearing the trousers I used them all, including the zipped holster pocket which held my phone and protected it from dust etc. The front holster pockets are simply great for holding screws, small tools etc and there are enough of them to allow me separate different sizes of screws, nails and bits. The standard front pockets are deep enough to hold car keys and change without any danger of them falling out if you have to kneel or bend. On the rear of the hips are a couple of tool loops as well as a screwdriver/plier loop on the right leg. One of the spacious rear pockets has a flap for safe holding of a wallet or even documents, while the other is a great place for a handful of sizeable nails or screws.

Custom kneepads are slotted into pockets on the knees – again so convenient to use and they didn’t end up halfway down my shins.

Two of the best aids to comfort is the stretch material used in the crotch and the ventilated knee sections.

Perhaps the best thing was that my clients both commented on how stylish and smart the trousers looked when I wore them. A small thing perhaps, but looks do count, and I can’t find any fault with the design either. These trousers definitely fall into my “Highly Recommended” category and I will continue proudly to wear them.

I also had the good fortune to try out the Solid Gear work shoes. These are in a “Tough Trainer” style with a Vibram sole and padded, moisture wicking inside. Key for me was the Boa Closure System on the shoes that allow almost instant tightening and releasing of the “laces”. On the particular job I was working on it was a great hit with me and the clients as I could quickly change shoes every time I went from indoors to outdoors without having to trail mud on the carpets and floors. I can foresee a time when all work shoes will be made like this….

From looking back to powering forward - The Snickers Next Generation Press Launch and Fashion Show

Report by Matthew Beard

In the past, a fashion show featuring Builders Work wear clothing might be thought of as a somewhat cumbersome affair. However, when the ToolBUSINESS team made the trip to Shoreditch for the Snickers Next Generation Press Launch and Fashion Show, their choice of up-market venue in the White Rabbit Studio proved it was anything but.

DancersFashion and Dance show by SnickersSnickers dancersSnickers Event Guests

Along with Snickers launching their ‘Next Generation’ of Trousers, it was also an opportunity to look back at the previous forty years of the brand innovation. The show began with ‘Stone Age Man’ (and woman!) wielding tools and wearing ‘basic protection’ clothing, also described as prehistoric loincloths. As two dancers gyrated down the runaway, with dub step booming from the speakers, everyone could see we were in for a show.

We were then given a brief history of the creation of the Snickers brand, which came to existence after electrician Matti Viio felt his safety was being compromised by the poor quality of workwear.

This was then followed by homage to Viio and Snickers’ first products. As this was back in the swinging sixties, two models, clad in overalls stepped onto stage flanked by four disco dancers, demonstrating that even at its inception, Snickers products were both durable, and aesthetically pleasing. The show continued at an upbeat pace, detailing a wide range of Snickers’ tough yet fashionable work gear throughout the years.

It would be wrong to say the audience were ever bored, but in terms of fireworks, all this was mere procession to what was coming up. As two of the more ripped models stormed the runaway clothed in Snickers’ ‘Next Generation Trousers’ and not much else, the show was turned up from seven, to eleven. The trousers, known respectively as RUFF Work and RUFF Work Denim, were put through the paces as dancers moved, grooved, bounced and spun down the runway, with backflips, break dancing and various displays of head and hand stands on display.

The men cheered, the ladies swooned, I thought about joining a gym! Soon the stripped-to-waist models were joined on stage by their fellow dancers and they continued to dance the afternoon away. Two at a time the models would venture into the audience, climbing the two podiums set out either side, giving the audience a better look at both the products on show, and of course, their dance moves. Visit our video showcase at www.toolbusiness.co.uk to see them in full swing.

No sooner had the show come to close; then we were taken into a room for a particularly excellent artisan lunchtime buffet. With a selection of delicious sandwiches, lasagne and goats cheese salad; it was a spread Matti Viio himself would have applauded.

Peter Brett was also given the opportunity to speak with David Clark, Managing Director of Snickers Workwear UK;

‘David was keen to emphasize just how much work and research was done in order to make this Next Generation Snickers clothing range a success. While lots of end users had some input, new fabrics and designs were used in the designs of the New Generation trousers that really made a difference.

David was quick to point out that although the Snickers range encompasses trousers made especially for women, the new designs are so flexible, both literally and figuratively, that many women have adopted standard mens’ trousers for workwear.

He also gave me some information about other Snickers clothing ranges that were designed for site use, but for roles in which the number and design of pockets, for example, is less important than perhaps the “corporate” and smart look needed for people in contact with other professionals and the public.

Clearly, Snickers has tried to cover as many bases as possible and can enjoy their 40 years of market and design success providing tradespeople with practical, comfortable and appealing clothing, wherever they might work.’

With that, the day was over, and we were making the journey back from East London to Haywards Heath. Many thanks to Snickers and everyone at the White Rabbit Studios for an excellent afternoon.
