GCE Hire Fleet Ltd adds a brace of Volvo A45Gs

GCE Hire Fleet Ltd of Whittlesey near Peterborough has added two new Volvo A45Gs to its park of predominantly Volvo badged equipment.

“We have a long association with Volvo Construction Equipment products operating excavators, loading shovels and articulated haulers,” said GCE’s Managing Director, Chris Golborne. “This, however, is the first time we’ve opted for A45Gs as we feel the larger truck will open up new opportunities for our hire division along with our existing Volvo EC380 and EC480 excavators going forwards.”

With a carrying capacity of 41 tonnes and a heaped capacity of 26.2m³ using the overhung tailgate option, the Volvo A45G has a maximum speed of 57kph. Powered by the latest Stage-IV Volvo 16-litre engine developing 476 net horsepower, it features high torque at low engine speeds, resulting in good fuel efficiency, high performance, fast engine response and a long service life. The whole powertrain is designed and purpose built ensuring the best use is made of the available power and torque, even in tough working conditions. The engine in the drivetrain is matched to a torque converter with built in lock-up function and fitted with a fully automatic and adaptive transmission. The drivetrain features Volvo’s Automatic Traction Control (ATC) system as standard, which prevents operators leaving their haulers permanently set in all-wheel drive mode, even when not needed, for example on good or paved roads, when only 6X4 drive is required. ATC automatically disengages the rear axle when not needed, eliminating tyre skid when cornering and reducing tyre wear. However, when ATC system does sense slippage, the longitudinal differential lock and the 6x6 clutch are engaged together: this gives the hauler the optimum traction in all conditions.

Whilst the A45Gs have been supplied with standard body liners, GCE Hire Fleet has specified the factory fitted body warming option on both trucks and has taken out Volvo Blue service agreements meaning they will be serviced at the correct intervals by Volvo trained engineers using genuine Volvo parts.

GCE Hire Fleet Ltd offers a wide range of equipment for operated and non-operated hire nationwide, supported by a comprehensive fleet of plant vehicles and low loaders. The company, which was established back in 1985 by Chris Golborne and now employs twenty personnel, has recently moved into new premises which includes offices and workshops within its 11,500 ft² footprint on the Ashley Industrial Estate, Whittlesey.

Volvo places construction companies ahead of the pack

HOLMES Plant and Construction Ltd have been so impressed by Volvo’s compact excavators that they have expanded their hire fleet by a further seven vehicles.

SMT GB’s utility dealer, Contractors Equipment Sales Ltd (CES), delivered four zero-swing, 2.5-tonne ECR25Ds and three larger five-tonne reduced swing ECR50Ds to the company at Otley near Ipswich.

This bringsHomles Plant and Construction's total number of Volvo compact excavators to 12 in a large multi-branded hire fleet.

Good, robust machines

Holmes Plant and Construction Ltd’s co-Director, Ben Holmes, said: “The Volvo compact excavators are good, robust machines.

“They are easy to operate, they wear well and keep their appearance. We have regular clients who request them by name and since we find them very reliable, we tend to hire them to customers with projects further afield.

Just as importantly, we have developed a very good relationship with the team at CES who we find extremely helpful on technical and parts support when we need it.”

The ECR25D is the smallest zero swing model in the Volvo compact excavator range and is powered by a 1.1-litre low emission engine developing 21hp.

The larger ECR50D features a fuelefficient Volvo D2.6A four-cylinder engine that brings a useful powerincrease at 41.8hp.

Faster, more precise performance

The zero or short radius swing excavator design provides exceptional stability and is ideal for working in confined spaces.

Simultaneous control of slew and offset movements provides a faster, more precise performance and all hydraulic functions are performed in total independence for more control and less delay when handling multiple tasks.

Volvo - TLC Plant moves up a gear with a Volvo EC27D

Established just 12 months ago by two young entrepreneurs, TLC Plant has moved up a gear by adding a new Volvo EC27D compact excavator thanks to the continued demand for more and more work in the Devon locality.

The new 2.7 tonne compact excavator was supplied following a successful demonstration by SMT GB’s utility dealer for the south-west of England, Plant and Engineering Services. “We were looking to add a larger machine as our existing micro-excavator has its limitations in terms of digging capacity, so we rang around the obvious candidates,” explains co-partner, Lewis Clarke. “It was Plant and Engineering Services who proved to be very proactive in giving us an opportunity to try a machine on demonstration, then follow this up with a sensible quotation. Straight away we were extremely impressed with the Volvo EC27D - everything was just right – from the smoothness of the controls, the machine’s stability and the quality of build, so we had no doubts about placing the order,” he continues.

Joining a smaller 1.2 tonne micro-excavator, the EC27D is powered by a Volvo 1.6 litre, low-emission Stage-III engine coupled to a load sensing hydraulic system for optimum performance and fuel saving. Simultaneous control of slew and offset movements provides faster, more precise performance due to the right joystick control lever that features an electronically proportional roller. This allows the operator to accurately adjust hydraulic flow as needed. All hydraulic functions are performed in total independence for more control and less delay when handling multiple tasks. An automatic two-speed travel system engages when operating in high-speed mode, automatically shifting gear from high to low according to the travel load. Another feature for increased efficiency is the standard auto-idling system that lowers engine speed to idle if a control is not used for five seconds. The engine reverts to the pre-selected speed almost instantly when any control is moved. This system delivers lower fuel consumption, longer engine life and less environmental noise.

The EC27D features Volvo’s industry-leading comfortable cab for less fatigue and more production. The ergonomically designed cab offers greater leg and foot room, making it one of the most spacious in its category.

The new arrival will be used on general self-operated hire and will be deployed on groundworks, drainage and ditch maintenance, driveway construction and other related activities.

TLC Plant is located near Crediton and not far from Exeter and the main arterial routes connecting Devon and the West Country, The recently formed company is operated by business partners Lewis Clarke and Tom Lee.

Plant & Engineering Services of Beare near Exeter is the dealer for Volvo utility covering the south-west of England.

Volvo - Willie Paterson’s Volvo EC18D is a ‘jack of all trades’

Volvo - Willie Paterson’s Volvo EC18D is a ‘jack of all trades’

The 1.8 tonne compact excavator was supplied to proprietor Willie Paterson by SMT GB’s utility dealer, Rockbreakers UK, and replaces an older EC15B which was originally purchased back in 2005. “We’ve been really pleased with the original machine and that prompted us to replace it with the enhanced EC18D with the extending tracks and two-speed travel,” says Willie. “The machine does everything we want of it on site from getting into quite restricted areas to clean out conveyor belts, breaking concrete to expose broken water mains, maintaining ditches and water courses on the property boundaries and  general ground maintenance,” he says. “We have the usual assortment of buckets. A hydraulic hammer and, more recently, we’ve added a hedge and ground cover cutter which runs off the third line.”

The Volvo EC18D features a D0.9A Volvo diesel engine that meets the latest EPA Stage-IV emission regulations. Emissions are further kept to a minimum thanks to the optional automatic idling system, which reduces engine speed to idle if the controls are inactive for more than five seconds. If the machine is left idling for longer, the engine can be automatically shut down. This then stops the hour meter, leading to longer service intervals, lower operating costs and ensuring a better resale value for the machine.

The EC18D sports a tough rear counterweight providing outstanding impact resistance and shields all vital components.  The unique high-profile design is made from a single, strong piece of cast iron that wraps around each side of the machine for superb protection. The flat, toughened glass used on the four sides of the cab guarantees that replacements can be fitted simply, quickly and expensively if damage occurs.

The robust dozer blade is equipped with a welded-on cutting edge for superior wear resistance and a durable upper lip provides added protection against damage in tough applications and excellent stiffness when using the blade as a stabiliser. The sturdy structure and the curved profile of the blade ensure outstanding performance whether dozing or back filling.

Daily service points are logically grouped under the wide-opening engine hood. With Volvo’s patented multifunctional hydraulic oil filter, filtration occurs when the tank is filled or topped up and before the oil returns back via the drain lines. A transparent bowl enables easy oil level checks and permits early detection of contamination. Both the ease and speed of inspections, together with long 50-hour greasing intervals, increases uptime and encourages essential work to be carried out, enhancing machine lifetime.
